A New World
The game takes place on the continent of Astoria that was recently discovered not even one and a half centuries ago. Mind you discovery is a relative term, as there have been creatures and races that have lived upon it for millennia. The established and powerful Kingdoms and Empires of Vardun (the other main continent we concern ourselves with) have decided that the inhabitants are both backwards and weak. They don't properly exploit the riches of the lands around them. Hence it is a new age of exploration, conquest, and colonization for them as they rush to secure their own footholds in the New World.
Old world Powers
Here are a few of the major players we will concern ourselves with for now. This isn't an extensive list as there are other Kingdoms (typically smaller ones) and plenty of City States that exist in Vardun that have yet to really set out to explore or colonize the new continent. As such new players can be added anytime the DM feels like it, even just to spite 'dem lousy players.
Kingdom of Geranna
The Kingdom of Geranna is old and full of tradition. It is ruled by King Evemach IV currently. It has a longstanding rivalry with the Kingdom of Riladia who's island kingdom lies just off the coast to the North. They also fear the rising Empire of Verahar. Think France sorta with these guys (maybe not accent).
Kingdom of Riladia
The Kingdom of Riladia is an island Kingdom to in the northern area of Vardun. It has strong historical ties to Geranna as it's current ruling family is descended from a Gerannanian noble family that actually conquered the island kingdom about five centuries ago. For a long while the King of Riladia was actually a subject of the King of Geranna and owned lands in Geranna. This proved to be a source of conflict and for the past four centuries many wars have been fought between the two kingdoms. It is also suspicious of the growing Empire of Verahar, but open conflict has yet to occur as the Empire is on the continental proper and as yet poses no direct threat to Riladia itself. Indeed there has at times been a degree of cooperation with the Empire at times against Geranna. Currently ruled by Queen Anslyn. Obviously very English inspired here.
Empire of Verahar
The Empire is the youngest current power in Vardun at only a couple centuries old, though it claims a spiritual heritage with the fallen Empire of Ulysien as Emperor Agusta likes to look at Ulysien as a symbol of what he feels should be, a supreme unified world, in his command. The Empire was created by the first Emperor Olthop I as he rose in rebellion against the old kings of the now defunct Kingdom of Lossa. It is this that has created the longstanding animosity of the Holy Kingdom of Ethoresen who's theocracy viewed in the strong piety of worship of Pelor of Lossa a kindred Kingdom that was destroyed by an upstart heathen. The Empire is also very expansionist and has often warred with Geranna and most other kingdoms in Verdun. Despite it's enemies the Empire is continuing to grow in power and is looking over the ocean with a covetous eye.
Holy Kingdom of Ethoresen
The Holy Kingdom of Ethoresen (don't forget to mention the holy part near a Ethorean, they like their religion) is all but a Theocracy in name. The King, Erasmus the VI, is really the noble figurehead of the priesthood of Pelor, God of the Sun. Within Ethoresen even the worship of fellow gods or goddesses of light is barely tolerated. The Kingdom takes upon itself a holy mission to spread the light of Pelor's grace to all lands. As such it can come into conflict with all the other kingdoms of Vardun at times who in the eyes of a Ethorean lack the proper piety to Pelor. The Holy Kingdom holds a special animosity towards the Empire though as a group of heathen upstarts (not that the Empire particularly worships a particular god or belief system) that overthrew the righteous Kingdom of Lossa.
Dwarven Kingdom of Khaz Durril
This kingdom located in the southern parts of Vardun is the largest single Dwarven kingdom to be found. Over time it has shrunk in size and power compared to other kingdoms, but the Dwarves to be found here are a very proud people that seek to regain their once great glory. Currently it is neutral in world affairs for the most part and will trade with all the various Kingdoms to be found in Vardun. The metalworking of the Dwarves is famous around the world.
New World Places and Colonies
Here are a few of the currently relevant cities, colonies, and places in the Continent of Astoria. Again, not extensive and additions will be made as I feel are needed.
Free City of Cannich
*This is where the party will start*
The Free City of Cannich is a bit of a unique case in terms of colonization attempts in Astoria. It was founded primarily by groups of exiles, refugees, and outlaws from Riladia and Geranna with a significant number of religious outcasts from Ethoresen, and a general migration of immigrants from other kingdoms that for one reason or another didn't quite fit in at home. Indeed Cannich is a melting pot of various cultures and due to such actually owes no aligence to an established Kingdom or Empire.
It was built on the ruins of a much older city (that little is known about) at the mouth of the Everlain River. It is about the size of a large town (almost a full city size) that has around 18,000 inhabitants and as such is one of the largest cities in the New World. It sits on a major trade route up the coast and is a place of vital strategic importance which has actually worked in the favor of the city that wishes to remain unaligned, as several times in history attempts to take the city by one kingdom or another run into the forces of another kingdom that doesn't want the city to be controlled by opposing forces.
The reason the city is such an important trade route is due to it being one of the fastest ways to avoid the Sandmarsh Archipelago that lies just off, and runs along, the coast. The Archipelago is a series of marshy and sandy (sometimes even rocky) islands, rocky outcrops, and sandbars that houses many hostile Lizardfolk tribes as well as many pirates that prey on passing merchant ships. A ship can either chose to stay close to the coast near Cannich, or skirt wide around the Archipelago as going through it often results in grief. One of the key features of Cannich actually plays into this, an ancient, mile long bridge overhangs high above the deep channel that lies along the coast. No one knows who built it, but it connects to a large rocky island that has been converted into a fortress just off the shore. Ships pass under this bridge known at least currently as the Arch of Cannich.
Tresholme
The Gerannaian Colony of Tresholme sits on at the mouth of the Wyngarne River. It is slightly south west of Cannich.
New Corwen
The Riladian Colony of New Corwen sits at the mouth of the Potsdam River and is the first colony founded by Riladia.
Blaseglen
Blaseglen is a Cannichian village on the shores of Loch Deneshire. It is one of the larger villages that lay inland of the Astorian coast.
